Iron-Rich Foods: (Several blood donors were turned away at our last drives due to low iron counts - please take this information seriously). The amount and type of iron in your diet is important. (See Below) Some iron-rich foods are:
Meat & Eggs:
Bread & Cereals
Food has two types of iron — heme and non-heme iron. Heme iron is found in meat, fish and poultry. It is the form of iron that is most readily absorbed by your body. You absorb up to 30 percent of the heme iron that you consume. Eating meat generally boosts your iron levels far more than eating non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is found in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. Foods with non-heme iron are still an important part of a nutritious, well-balanced diet, but the iron contained in these foods won’t be absorbed as completely. You absorb between two and 10 percent of the non-heme iron that you consume. When you eat heme iron with foods higher in non-heme iron, the iron will be more completely absorbed by your body. Foods high in vitamin C – like tomatoes, citrus fruits and red, yellow and orange peppers – can also help with the absorption of non-heme iron. (Information from American Red Cross Blood Drive) |
COVID DONOR SPOTLIGHT- IF you qualify, please call your local Donor Site to see if this will work for you also!
Jennifer Middendorf is an insurance professional, wife and mother of two daughters. She is also a longtime type A positive blood donor, giving regularly through her employer-sponsored blood drives. In July, after returning home from a socially distanced vacation, Jennifer became ill and tested positive for COVID19, as did her husband and one daughter. Jennifer was hospitalized during part of her illness. “When I was hospitalized and on the COVID floor, you couldn’t help but hear just how sick many were on the floor. Nurses described plasma as the primary treatment for those most ill,” she said. After recovering, Jennifer signed up to be a COVID-19 convalescent plasma donor. On Sept. 25, she gave her first plasma donation. Jennifer encourages others who may be eligible to become donors, too. “It’s relatively painless, and the nurses are wonderful!” she said. “We look for ways to make this come to an end and get back to some degree of normal life. Help out your fellow neighbor, wear a mask and donate to make sure we don’t lose more people unnecessarily. This is a time for selflessness to take the front row." American Red Cross Blood Drive
Please go to link: Bend Platelet Donation Center 815 SW Bond Street Suite 110 Bend, OR 97702 If you desire to donate blood... Thank you for being safe during this interesting time. ID is required to donate. Thank you for your support! Please drink plenty of water also. *Rapid Pass available the day of the Drive* This question was asked of me recently, maybe everyone is interested in the answer: How much iron do I lose when donating blood or platelets? Each time you donate blood, you lose between 220-250 mg of iron. If you donate a power red, you lose twice that amount, about 470 mg of iron. It may take up to 24-30 weeks for your body to replace the iron lost through a blood donation. That time may vary, depending on what your iron level was before donating and if you take iron supplements or multivitamins with iron. https://www.redcrossblood.org/learn-about-blood/iron-and-blood-donation/iron-info-frequent-donors along with several other questions and their answers.
Some foods and beverages can decrease the amount of iron that your body absorbs.

I want to thank the staff of the Red Cross who helped with our Blood Drive and the volunteers who spent their day serving the staff and donors.
Most importantly, we thank our Lord who has blessed us all through the sharing of His Blood. It is actually through the sacrificial giving of His Blood that we have the privilege of serving His people by sharing our blood!
